Moto2 may have been the most successful category for the Gresini set-up this season but Team Owner Fausto Gresini has enjoyed his squad’s MotoGP campaign as well, most notably the rousing end to Marco Simoncelli’s debut year in the elite class.
“You’d have to say that the start of the season was not easy for Marco Simoncelli. As a rookie starting in MotoGP with little testing and experience it was always going to be difficult. Neither Marco nor the team had much experience, but his attitude has always been positive and this has helped him. He fell a lot at the start, which compromised the first part of the year, but he’s always shown a great tenacity and been very demanding of himself,” said Gresini in the attached video interview.
“By the end of the Championship he had improved a lot. The help from Honda has been fundamental and the whole team has grown up. We were very good in the second half of the season and Marco demonstrated he has great potential, above all thinking about next season. The balance is positive because the evolution has been significant and continual.”
“In every race he gained a different perspective, and to be a rider you must always be confident in yourself, which has helped him take big strides. The fourth place in Portugal was the highlight of the season and to finish the season like this for a rookie such as Marco has given us great confidence for next year.”
On the other side of the San Carlo Honda Gresini garage in 2010 the campaign of Marco Melandri did not go as expected. “Marco Melandri has always represented a lot for us, and we had won races with him in the past. We had expected good results but they didn’t materialise,” explained Gresini. “When it looked like we had found the right direction a crash would force us to start from zero. When you lose a third of the season you start to think about next year and things become complicated.”
Commenting on the Italian’s final Championship finish of tenth, Gresini added: “This is not Marco’s position but he has not found anything with this bike. I would have liked to have done more to help him. I hope he does well in his new adventure because we appreciate him a lot.”
Next season holds exciting prospects for the team. “In 2011 Simoncelli will be an official HRC rider, and this is a great responsibility for us and him,” said Gresini. “We know he can still develop and grow and have a great Championship. We’ll start with a good basis of experience and we’ll work side by side with the HRC technicians in the Tests. It’s difficult to say what we can achieve, MotoGP is always a complicated category, but we know we have a great rider and a great bike.”
Joining Simoncelli will be his former 250cc rival Hiroshi Aoyama, about whom Gresini said: “He hasn’t had much luck in MotoGP. We believe he’s a good rider and that he needs a team with experience, and we’re convinced we can help him progress. We’re not expecting race wins, but he has potential.”

I can't wait for the next season for so many reasons....but one of them is Marco Simoncelli. The guy really came into his own in the last few races, banging fairings on more than one occasion with the big boys up the front. I think he has great potential.

we know he is quick, can't win fuck all if you can't finish?

He was finishing his last few races!! Remember the drag race with Dovi in one of the last ones? Only for the grunt of Dovi's Repsol Honda, he would have gotten his first podium. He had to settle for fourth place, 0.06 of a second down....
